Wilmington's Riverfront will be invaded by an unusual group this weekend: pirates.

At noon Saturday, the Meka II, billed as a pirate vessel, will sail down the Cape Fear River from Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to Port City Marina, where it will dock for the weekend.

The ship's arrival will be the start of the “Feast of the Pirates” event presented by the Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust and Port City Marina.

Stephanie Fornes , the president of Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust, said as the ship makes its approach to the marina, pirates along the riverfront will shoot white powder cannons welcoming the ship, and the ship will respond by shooting cannons back.

Fornes added that the Meka II is not a tall ship, and there will not be any tours while it is docked, but people will be able to walk up and view the ship.

According to a press release, the "Feast of the Pirates," which runs through Sunday, will include costume contests, live music, pirate vessel reenactments and many more games and activities. The events coincide with the annual Riverfest celebration downtown.
