Metropolitan College / Warsash Maritime Academy received the SAFETY4SEA Training Award, sponsored by Chandris (Hellas) Inc., for collaborating with the aim of delivering comprehensive Naval and Maritime Education with an international perspective. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: IMCA, MAGSAYSAY Peoples Resources Corporation, Hellenic Navy - NAFTES and Veritas Training Center.

Presenting the award Mr. Christos Ioannidis, SHQE Director-DPA-CSO, Chandris (Hellas) Inc., said “Chandris (Hellas) Inc. believes that ‘’Building Ships is not enough” and that our “Utmost Priority” is to train the finest seafarers to safely carry cargoes worldwide as well as to protect the environment. Talking about training we are delighted to present this award which rewards a powerful collaboration between Metropolitan College and Warsash School with the aim to provide education for the Maritime industry’’.

Accepting the award on behalf of Metropolitan College, Dr. Fotis Papageorgiou, Piraeus Campus Director, stated: ‘’The position of Greece as the leading force in the shipping industry has led us to this strategic investment in our country, in partnership with Solent University, a world-renowned University and a global leader in Maritime and Shipping Studies. In the future, we envisage to be the greatest Marine Academy in South Europe. We support this vision by developing a wide range of collaborations with important organizations and institutions of the shipping industry globally’’.

Greece’s Metropolitan College has collaborated with the world-renowned British Warsash Maritime Academy, to deliver education with an international perspective. Warsash Maritime Academy is part of Southampton Solent University’s Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering. Warsash Maritime Academy has provided first class education, training, consultancy and research services to the international shipping, commercial yacht, and offshore oil and gas industries for over 70 years. The programmes of study offering with the Metropolitan/ Warsash collaboration are two: BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management (falls under the School of Merchant Navy Captains) and BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering & Management (falls under the School of Merchant Navy Engineers). The curriculum includes paid internships at the leading shipping companies in Greece with which Metropolitan College collaborates. Upon successful completion of their studies, students can obtain a Certificate of Competence issued directly by UK MCA. The world recognition of the Warsash Maritime Academy gives graduates an important advantage in pursuing a home or international career.

Metropolitan College / Warsash Maritime Academy attracted the most votes by the end of the voting period which held online during a two-month period. SAFETY4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for Excellence, Sustainability, Training, Technology, Initiative and Leadership. Other winners of the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Awards are: Alpha Bulkers Shipmanagement Inc. for the Dry Bulk Operator Award, Springfield Shipping Co. for the Tanker Operator Award, Sustainable Shipping Initiative for the Sustainability Award, Synergy Group for the Technology Award, North of England P&I Club for the Initiative Award, Mr. Dimitrios Fafalios for the Leadership Award and Dr. Sadan Kaptanoglu for the Personality award.
