Another visit, lots of experiences in China – by Alexandros Panidis

Not long ago, I got the opportunity to get a first glimpse of China. I was introduced to a whole new world. New tastes, new sights and new experiences. And soon after, I was lucky enough to visit the country for a second time.

Being in Beijing for another time, I visited a different part of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section. Unlike the Juyong Pass, this part is hidden deep in the forest, up in the mountain and can be reached by a cable car. The view of the endless mountains is breathtaking.

Shortly after, I headed for another two Chinese cities, with the first stop being the city of Xi’an. The capital of the Shaanxi province is located in the eastern end of the Silk Road and was hometown of many dynasties. But is known around the world for the Terracotta Army, the 8000 life-sized soldiers and horses guarding the mausoleum of the first emperor of China.

Next stop was the city of Nigbo, home to Zhoushan Port, the world’s largest port in terms of cargo tonnage. While it is famous for its port and transport hubs, what really caught my eye was the bright and vivid view of the buildings surrounding the Yangtze river. The city is really brought to life at night.

Then it was time to visit the neighbouring city of Shaoxing, famous for the local strong yellow wine. Nearby, I was amazed by a beautiful tea plantation in the small village of Yunshongchun and the impressive Tiangong Buddha, a 30-meter-tall Buddha statue carved into a stone pillar in the Keqiao District.

Just 65 kilometres northwest of Shaoxing, lies the city of Hangzhou. The headquarters of huge enterprises, such as Alibaba Group, are built on the side of West Lake, offering a beautiful landscape. On the lake there are many very beautifully decorated tourist boats, which look like floating houses, that fill the area.

Last, but definitely not least, I spent some time in Shanghai. Although I had a tiny time window to really explore the city, I was stunned by its skyline and the modern architecture throughout its center.

As always, one thing is for sure when it comes to China. You can never take more than a glimpse. Because there is so much to do, see and experience, that you always have to come back for more. And who knows, maybe this is not the last time I visit…
